Marine Heat Exchangers: Practical Support for Repair, Replacement and Retubing

Marine heat exchangers are expected to perform reliably in difficult conditions. Seawater exposure, vibration, restricted access and demanding operating schedules all affect service life.

When a cooler or condenser fails, the impact can be immediate. A vessel may be held in port, a maintenance window may be extended, or a repair team may need a fast alternative to an original part with a long lead time.

AMI Exchangers supports marine customers with heat exchanger repair, replacement, retubing and bespoke manufacture.

Common Marine Heat Exchanger Applications

Marine vessels can include a wide range of cooling equipment, including:

  • Charge air coolers
  • Engine oil coolers
  • Gearbox oil coolers
  • Jacket water coolers
  • Condensers
  • Shell and tube heat exchangers
  • Auxiliary cooling units

Each unit has a specific role, but reliability depends on good heat transfer, material suitability and practical maintenance access.

Why Marine Coolers Fail

Marine heat exchangers are often exposed to seawater or treated cooling water. Over time, corrosion, erosion, fouling and tube leakage can reduce performance.

Common issues include:

  • Blocked or fouled tubes
  • Corrosion around tube plates or end covers
  • Tube leaks
  • Failed gaskets or seals
  • Damaged connections
  • Reduced cooling performance under load
  • Obsolete original units

Early inspection and planned replacement can help reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

Repair, Retubing or Replacement?

The right route depends on the condition of the unit and the urgency of the requirement.

Repair may be suitable where damage is localised and the main structure remains serviceable.

Retubing can extend the life of shell and tube heat exchangers where the shell, covers and tube plates are still suitable.

Replacement may be the best route where the existing unit is beyond economic repair, difficult to source, or no longer suitable for the duty.

AMI can review existing coolers, drawings, photographs, dimensions and equipment information to help identify a practical option.

Supporting Planned and Urgent Marine Work

Marine maintenance often works around tight windows. When a vessel is already alongside, delays can be expensive.

AMI can support planned shutdowns, urgent replacement requirements and legacy equipment enquiries. Where drawings are unavailable, our team can often work from sample units, measurements and photographs to help progress the job.
